PGS, a world leader in subsurface imaging for the energy industry, needed a better way to monitor health, safety, environment, and quality (HSEQ) issues across about 7,500 free-text incident cards submitted each year. The company’s safety team struggled to categorize and analyze this large volume of unstructured data to spot trends and identify hidden risks before incidents occurred. PGS worked with Cognite and used Cognite Data Fusion™ to address the challenge.

Cognite helped PGS ingest the observation cards into Cognite Data Fusion™ and build an HSEQ Categorizer to classify free-text reports based on keywords and rules. The results were visualized in a Power BI dashboard with alerts for proactive monitoring, helping PGS improve crew safety, speed up response times, and strengthen communication between vessels and onshore teams. By connecting related incidents, PGS also uncovered repeated PLB issues across several vessels, leading the supplier to change the design and further improve safety.
