How Cognite Data Fusion™ Helped Ringerikskraft Digitalize a Hydropower Plant From the 1970s

Ringerikskraft, a Norwegian hydropower producer and grid operator, needed a better way to access information from its aging Hønefoss II plant, which was built in 1978 and is now largely unstaffed. When alarms occurred, engineers had to travel to the site to investigate, making it difficult to quickly understand what was happening inside the plant. Cognite helped address this challenge with Cognite Data Fusion and InField.

Cognite implemented a minimally invasive IoT-based solution that captured control system data using cameras, analog-to-digital conversion, and a 3D photogrammetry model of the plant. The data was contextualized in Cognite Data Fusion and made available through dashboards and InField, giving experts real-time access to sensor readings and alarm details from anywhere. The result was improved operations and maintenance, instant access to previously inaccessible data, and an extended life for the plant without costly control system replacement.
