How Cognite Data Fusion™ Enabled Effective Slug Prediction

Aker BP, an oil exploration and development company focused on the Norwegian continental shelf, needed a better way to monitor and prevent slugging in its Alvheim and Volund fields. Slugging is difficult to predict because similar operating conditions can produce different outcomes, and the company wanted a more effective approach than physical models alone. Cognite provided Cognite Data Fusion to help address this challenge.

Using Cognite Data Fusion, Aker BP analyzed thousands of live and historical time series to detect slugging patterns and feed them into machine learning models for predictive monitoring. Cognite enabled real-time, actionable insights and early warning signs of imminent slugging, helping operators support production decisions. The result was a 1% increase in production at the Alvheim oil field through improved slug handling and prediction capabilities.
