Wintershall Dea AG, a global search and production company for natural gas and crude oil, needed a better way to monitor an installed gas turbine at its Mittelplate oil field. Using Cognite Data Fusion™, Wintershall Dea wanted to move beyond fixed alarm thresholds and give maintenance teams earlier warnings of failures so they could troubleshoot issues before a breakdown occurred.
Cognite helped Wintershall Dea combine sensor data, work orders, and other contextual information in Cognite Data Fusion™, then build and operationalize machine learning models to monitor turbine shutdowns. The results were displayed in a Power BI dashboard with alerts, trends, and shutdown analysis, helping the company detect unhealthy shutdowns, reduce unplanned downtime and repair costs, and move toward condition-based maintenance. Wintershall Dea estimates the solution could save $865,000 per incident, and Cognite’s work improved safety and reliability.
