Case Study: Aker BP achieves lossless hydrocarbon allocation with Cognite Data Fusion™

A Cognite Case Study

How Aker BP and Cognite Secured Correct Allocation of Oil and Gas With Minimal Production Loss

Aker BP, an independent oil and gas operator on the Norwegian continental shelf, needed a way to accurately calibrate multiphase flow meters at its Alvheim field while minimizing production losses during monthly calibration. With six companies sharing production from the field and limited separator capacity on the FPSO, the existing rerouting process caused well choke-backs and downtime. Cognite’s Cognite Data Fusion™ was used to support an industrial data-driven approach.

Cognite and Aker BP developed and tested an algorithm-based calibration method using contextualized data in Cognite Data Fusion™. The new approach reduced the need to reroute third-party lines to the separator, with one version requiring only a single reroute and another eliminating rerouting altogether. Field tests showed deferrals could be cut by more than 95%, delivering an estimated $3.5 million in annual savings and improving allocation accuracy for future field developments.
