Siemens in Denmark needed to connect equipment and instrumentation in a high-security facility to a remote monitoring location without compromising security or allowing unauthorized access. The challenge was compounded by an unreliable OPC server and the difficulty of using DCOM-based OPC networking across the network. Siemens turned to Cogent DataHub to make the integration possible.

Cogent DataHub was installed at the secure site to encapsulate the chiller’s OPC server and run as a service, then additional DataHubs were deployed on each SCADA machine to tunnel data back to the monitoring facility through local OPC connections. This enabled real-time access to the chiller system from a safe distance, improved reliability, and eliminated the need for technicians to be onsite. Siemens also planned to extend the solution to UPS units and meter-reading devices, with all data flowing into the SCADA systems.
