ABB in Colombia needed a way to upgrade its electrical substations and retain process data for long periods, since standard SCADA trends and historical records are only stored temporarily. To address this, ABB looked for a tool that could extend its substation automation system and make more information available to operators.

ABB implemented Cogent DataHub to connect its MicroSCADA 61850-OPC Gateway to Oracle, bridging OPC data from IEC 61850-based substations into a database for long-term storage. With Cogent DataHub, ABB can save process data in Oracle for 2–4 years and monitor live information in the DataHub browser; the prototype was reported to be running well during testing.
