The Royal Society, a historic London-based learned society for the promotion of science, faced the challenge of making its vast physical archive of over 250,000 historic scientific manuscripts and images accessible online. They partnered with Cogapp to create a digital platform that would serve both academic historians and the science-curious public, requiring powerful search tools and high-resolution image viewing to facilitate new discoveries.
Cogapp developed the Science in the Making website, a comprehensive digital archive built with Craft CMS and powered by Elasticsearch and a IIIF image server. The solution featured an intuitive search with date filtering, a deep-zoom image viewer with advanced manipulation tools, and automated data enrichment from external sources. This made the entire collection available online for the first time, providing a unique resource for academic research and public engagement with the history of science.
