Medical research institute sheds undependable recovery system

Centenary Institute of Cancer Medicine and Cell Biology is an independent medical research institute in Sydney that manages critical, long-term research data (medical imaging, gene modification results, theses) for ~200 users. Their previous EMC Retrospect system was unreliable—single-threaded backups skipped asleep or offline machines, restores were slow and error-prone, and a two-person IT team needed a dependable, “set-and-forget” solution with self-restore capabilities.

The institute deployed CrashPlan (private cloud) for cross-platform, continuous endpoint backup and LDAP-based rollout, giving users simple self-restore tools and admins centralized, low-touch management. Restores that once took hours now complete in minutes, admin time and costs have dropped, permission controls secure departing users’ data, and Code42’s support smoothed the transition.
