Tangoe, a technology expense-management company of 2,000+ employees, faced challenges in engineering retention and career development that relied too heavily on qualitative feedback. To create clarity and accountability, Tangoe adopted Code Climate’s Velocity metrics to bring structure to code reviews, mentoring, and manager feedback.

Code Climate’s Velocity reports (Activity Log, Pull Request throughput, etc.) were shared weekly and used in daily standups and one-on-one coaching, with managers transparently sharing individual metrics non-punitively. This data-driven approach by Code Climate helped Tangoe boost retention and develop more senior engineers and engineering managers, giving developers clear benchmarks for improvement.
