Nexstar Media Group launches 197 local news apps with Code and Theory

Nexstar Media Group, the largest local broadcast television group in the United States, faced a challenge with its digital transition. Its 197 local news stations used a variety of inefficient third-party mobile apps that were difficult to manage and offered limited functionality. Nexstar partnered with the digital agency Code and Theory to create a unified and upgraded mobile app experience to better serve its audiences.

Code and Theory designed and implemented a scalable platform with a modular design, enabling Nexstar to launch unique iOS and Android apps for each of its 197 stations. The solution prioritized key audience interests like weather and crime, and featured a robust notification system to drive user retention. This strategy successfully helped over 130 local news stations transition to digital, fostering a greater sense of community and relevancy for users across the country.
