A Cockroach Labs Case Study
Stash, a fintech serving 2 million active subscribers and managing $3 billion in assets, needed to build a new banking infrastructure (Stash Core) on a tight six‑month go‑to‑market timeline. Their primary challenges were achieving five‑nines (99.999%) availability, guaranteed data consistency, and a multi‑region, multi‑cloud foundation to prevent incorrect balances and reduce latency — requirements that made PostgreSQL operationally complex. They selected Cockroach Labs’ CockroachDB (starting on the open‑source core and later moving to an enterprise license) to meet those needs.
Cockroach Labs implemented CockroachDB as Stash’s system of record, integrated with Kubernetes and initially self‑hosted in AWS while testing a multi‑region cluster for future expansion, and provided weekly support, training, and CEA access to accelerate delivery without hiring extra engineers. The platform moved into soft production in September 2022 and full production in December 2022 with “no issues getting into production with CockroachDB,” enabling mission‑critical banking, PII, and accounting workloads; outcomes include supporting 2 million active subscribers, $3 billion in assets managed, and achieving the high availability target.
