A Cockroach Labs Case Study
Netflix, a global media and streaming company with over 278 million subscribers, faced a need for a highly available, strongly consistent SQL database that could scale across regions and support multi-active topology for services like a Cloud Drive, CDN control plane, device management, and new gaming initiatives. After evaluating options, Netflix selected Cockroach Labs’ CockroachDB-as-a-Service to meet requirements for global consistent transactions, region failover, and multi-region scalability.
Cockroach Labs delivered CockroachDB-as-a-Service and Netflix’s Data Platform team deployed it across the company, enabling multi-active topology, automatic failover, and strong consistency for a variety of production use cases. The result is a fleet of 380+ CockroachDB clusters (including 160+ production clusters and 60+ multi-region clusters), the largest single-region cluster storing ~26.5 TB, and mission-critical support for device management, ML orchestration, and a 48-node multi-region gaming control plane—delivering improved availability, seamless region failover, and measurable operational scale.
