Streaming Video Platform Needs Hybrid/Multi-Cloud & Multi-Region Database

MUX, a streaming video platform that stores massive amounts of video metadata and supports customers across clouds and regions, needed a hybrid/multi-cloud, multi-region database with high availability and zero downtime. After finding PostgreSQL and other open-source databases could not meet its uptime, performance, and compliance needs, MUX evaluated and selected Cockroach Labs’ CockroachDB.

Cockroach Labs implemented CockroachDB as a drop-in PostgreSQL replacement, enabling multi-region deployments, geo-partitioning to pin data to specific locations, and intelligent traffic routing across replicas. As a result, MUX gained high availability (reducing downtime risk during failures and maintenance), faster regional reads/writes for just-in-time transcoding, multi-cloud flexibility, and improved GDPR compliance—positioning the company to scale video volume while simplifying operations and reducing future costs.
