Making the right move Modernizing a monolith with CockroachDB

Rightmove, the UK’s #1 property portal, faced the challenge of modernizing a monolithic Oracle-based infrastructure while maintaining high availability and reducing operational overhead. Their Central Platform and Reliability Engineering Team was managing an active-active-active datacenter setup with async replication that increased cognitive load for developers and enforced long database change cycles, so they sought a highly available, geo-distributed database with built-in replication. After POCs, Rightmove selected CockroachDB from Cockroach Labs to meet those requirements.

Cockroach Labs helped Rightmove migrate incrementally by streaming data from Oracle to CockroachDB Cloud on Google Cloud, moving microservices one-by-one and switching pods to a single CockroachDB endpoint. The managed CockroachDB deployment removed replication management, enabled automatic upgrades with no downtime, and cut release wait times (no more 11-day delays), massively reducing developer complexity and speeding greenfield development. Today CockroachDB is Rightmove’s primary relational store supporting ~180 microservices and delivering measurable scale and reliability for 34M searches/day, 1.3+ billion minutes/month, and 99.99% uptime.
