How Stake eliminated the risk of downtime for global high frequency trading with CockroachDB

Stake, an online trading platform founded to give Australians access to U.S. stocks, needed a way to eliminate downtime and keep up with extreme trading volume as it expanded globally. After a GameStop-driven traffic surge exposed the limits of its Amazon EC2 and RDS for PostgreSQL setup, the team needed immediate horizontal scale, multi-region support, and strong read/write consistency for its financial systems.

Cockroach Labs provided CockroachDB as a managed, Postgres-compatible distributed database that allowed Stake to migrate quickly with only about a 5% rewrite. Stake completed the production move in about 4 hours, gained a single global view across three regions, improved compliance by pinning regulated data to specific regions, and now uses CockroachDB to power authentication and its financial ledger with 99.99% availability and far greater resilience.
