Case Study: Shopmonkey achieves geo-aware, multi-region scalability and low-latency performance with Cockroach Labs

A Cockroach Labs Case Study

Preview of the Shopmonkey Case Study

How Shopmonkey built a faster, more scalable, geo-distributed version of their application on CockroachDB

Shopmonkey, a SaaS platform for automotive care retailers with about 6,000 customers, was facing hyperscale growth and needed to guarantee always-on availability, low latency across the US and Canada, and a simpler, more maintainable architecture. After evaluating options, CTO Jeff Haynie selected CockroachDB from Cockroach Labs to address sensitive geographic, latency, and availability requirements.

Using Cockroach Labs’ CockroachDB, Shopmonkey rebuilt its stack into a geo-aware, multi-region platform — three super regions with three CockroachDB nodes per AZ, regional-by-row locality, private links between data centers, and change data capture for real-time processing. The Cockroach Labs solution now supports billions of rows, improves resiliency during outages, reduces maintenance overhead, lowers latency for geographically distributed shops, and enables faster regional scaling as Shopmonkey continues growing.
