How Route powers always-on data for 1+ billion orders with CockroachDB

Route, a post-purchase eCommerce platform protecting packages for more than 13,000 brands and millions of app users, faced the challenge of scaling order, shipment, and tracking data into the billions without manual sharding or downtime. To replace a PostgreSQL monolith and meet requirements for a single view of data, horizontal scale, always-on availability, and low latency, Route chose Cockroach Labs’ cloud-native distributed SQL database, CockroachDB.

Cockroach Labs implemented CockroachDB as Route’s centralized transactional store—running on AWS (EKS, nine-node multi‑AZ clusters with EBS)—allowing Route to consolidate data into relational models, host multiple billion‑row tables and ~52 TB of storage, and power 1+ billion orders and millions of active users. The deployment delivered zero‑downtime scaling (including ahead of Black Friday), improved reliability and observability, higher internal customer satisfaction, and measurable ROI from Cockroach Labs’ platform and support.
