How Devsisters built a world-class game with over 10 million downloads on CockroachDB

Devsisters, a South Korean video game developer, needed a database that could handle the unpredictable scale of its global mobile game Cookie Run: Kingdom. As the game grew far beyond launch expectations, the team needed to support heavy traffic, distributed transactions, horizontal scalability, and strong consistency—requirements that stretched beyond what their previous Couchbase and Aurora MySQL setups could comfortably handle. They chose Cockroach Labs’ CockroachDB as the foundation for the game’s backend.

Devsisters implemented CockroachDB on AWS EKS with Kubernetes, using a multi-availability-zone, 90-node deployment to power event sourcing, snapshots, and fast-read projection tables. With Cockroach Labs’ CockroachDB, the game scaled to more than 150 million downloads, 8 million monthly active users, 360,000 concurrent users, and peak traffic of 60,000 transactions per second, while smoothly handling 2x midnight release traffic and frequent node failures with minimal operational effort.
