Building Customer Identity Access Management (CIAM) with CockroachDB

A U.S. Financial Software Company needed a new customer identity access management (CIAM) database after its Oracle-based system with GoldenGate replication on AWS caused delayed updates across regions. The lag—sometimes 30 seconds to five minutes—meant customers could create accounts but still be unable to log in right away, creating a poor authentication experience and raising concerns about availability, performance, and consistency.

Cockroach Labs provided CockroachDB as a multi-region solution with synchronous writes, strong consistency, and built-in resilience across three AWS regions. Using duplicate indexes and leaseholder pinning, the company achieved local reads at about 1 millisecond and writes around 280 milliseconds, eliminating login lag and enabling highly available access even during a regional outage.
