Managing and Scaling the Cloud for NASA’s National Assets

NASA’s Earth Science Data & Information System (ESDIS) team needed a better way to manage and scale cloud usage as Earth science data volumes grew rapidly, including missions producing around 80 TB of data per day. Working in a multi-account AWS environment, NASA wanted to maximize autonomy and flexibility for users while reducing duplication, complexity, and cost through stronger shared services and governance.

NASA implemented cloudtamer.io for user authentication, authorization, spend monitoring, budget control, account management, and compliance automation. With cloudtamer.io, NASA was able to onboard selected AWS accounts with different budgets and security boundaries, enforce project budgets to support ADA compliance, and manage projects with policy-based cloud rules—helping ESDIS scale cloud operations more efficiently and support more diverse mission needs.
