A CloudLock Case Study
Oakland Unified School District (OUSD), a K–12 district serving about 37,000 students across 100 schools, pursued a cloud-first strategy to improve equity and education but faced major cloud-security challenges: strict privacy and compliance requirements (FERPA, HIPAA, SOPIPA), rising cyberbullying and inappropriate behavior, the need to detect anomalous user activity, and risks from third‑party cloud apps with excessive access. CTO John Krull prioritized a solution that could secure sensitive student and health data while enabling digital citizenship.
OUSD selected Cisco Cloudlock for its K‑12 policies, next‑gen cloud DLP, threat detection, rapid API deployment, and scalability. Cloudlock delivered real‑time detection of objectionable content and cyberbullying with forensic playback, surfaced exposed sensitive records for compliance, identified compromised accounts and geolocation anomalies, and gave administrators control over third‑party apps via a Community Trust Rating—improving both security posture and digital citizenship across the district.
