Stencil Draws on Cloudinary to Eliminate Complexity of Image Management

Stencil is a web-based graphic design platform that makes it easy for non-designers to create visuals for social media, blogs, and more. As founders Oliver Nassar and Adam Rotman built the product they deliberately avoided creating their own image-management system—citing storage, memory, server and development complexity—and needed a reliable, time-to-market solution for rendering, resizing and manipulating images within designs.

Stencil integrated Cloudinary’s URL-based image management API to handle thumbnails, transformations, masks/cutters and final image delivery, avoiding the cost and complexity of a homegrown system. The result: more than 200 hours of development time saved, transformed images served 2.5× faster, and a scalable setup supporting 500,000+ hosted images and over 1.5 million monthly transformations with high reliability and responsive support.
