Case Study: bidorbuy achieves reduced R&D costs and improved site performance with Cloudinary

A Cloudinary Case Study

Preview of the Bidorbuy Case Study

How bidorbuy reduced R&D costs and improved site performance

bidorbuy, the largest online marketplace in South Africa, was struggling to manage an image-heavy platform with more than 1.7 million products and hundreds of millions of images. Its self-hosted image infrastructure was difficult to scale, created file-system and disaster-recovery issues, and made it hard to support different image sizes across web and mobile. Cloudinary helped bidorbuy address these challenges with image handling and delivery capabilities.

Using Cloudinary, bidorbuy implemented named transformations for on-the-fly thumbnail generation, auto-upload and remote fetching to migrate images, and optimized delivery through Cloudinary’s CDN and browser-based image optimization. The result was faster site performance, improved end-user experience, and lower administrative effort. bidorbuy also expected to decommission its self-hosted infrastructure, reducing operational costs for infrastructure, storage, monitoring, and bandwidth, while freeing up staff time; Cloudinary had already reliably served images for nine months.
