Cloudinary Delivers Simplified Image Management Workflow for Fairfax Media’s Digital Transformation

Fairfax Media, a major Australian and New Zealand publisher behind mastheads like The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age, embarked on a digital transformation to streamline a time-consuming image workflow that was slowing journalists and engineers. Facing manual image cropping, variant storage, and limited scaling, the company chose Cloudinary over an in-house build to future-proof image delivery across devices and channels.

Using Cloudinary’s dynamic URL-based image manipulations, content-aware cropping, responsive support and format optimization, Fairfax eliminated the need to create and store multiple image variants and sped publishing. The rollout now manages about 3 million images, delivered up to a 25% reduction in file size, accelerated time to market, improved editorial and engineering productivity, and covers roughly 90% of Fairfax’s network.
