A Cloudinary Case Study
Bloomsbury Publishing’s Academic division set out to digitize encyclopedias, manuscripts and museum collections for university libraries, requiring secure management and manipulation of very high-resolution images, responsive delivery across devices, and tight access controls for paid users. Building an in-house solution would have taken nearly two years and added heavy editorial overhead, so Bloomsbury needed a faster, automated approach.
Using Cloudinary’s cloud DAM and automated image transformations, Bloomsbury stores a single high‑res master for each asset and delivers right‑sized, cropped and optimized images on demand while integrating with its XML workflow and HighWire authentication. The result: faster time to market (about a 50% reduction in publishing time and up to ~18–24 months saved versus building internally), <1s average load for image‑heavy pages, more than 100,000 documents digitized (~300 GB), and thousands of monthly requests and transformations with minimal editorial effort.
