A Cloudian Case Study
WGBH Boston, the public media producer behind PBS programs like Nova and Frontline, faced significant challenges managing its vast 50-year media archive. Stored on tapes and hard drives, the archive was difficult to scale, slow to retrieve, and posed a major data protection risk, as much of the content lacked an offsite disaster recovery copy. Seeking a modern solution, WGBH turned to vendor Cloudian to replace this outdated infrastructure.
Cloudian implemented its HyperStore object storage as an on-premises, hybrid cloud archive. The solution provided scalable, high-density storage with rich metadata tagging for fast search and automated policy-based replication to Amazon Glacier for disaster recovery. This gave WGBH immediate performance benefits, freeing up editing space in minutes instead of days, and future-proof scalability. The automated workflows and searchable metadata also unlocked new revenue potential by allowing the station to quickly license stock footage.
