University of Leicester Adopts Cloudian S3 Compatible Storage and Commvault for Backup

The University of Leicester needed a more resilient backup infrastructure to protect data for nearly 30,000 users, since its existing media-server-based system created a single point of failure that could leave backups and restores unavailable for weeks if hardware failed. To address this challenge, the university turned to Cloudian and its HyperStore object storage solution for backup.

Cloudian implemented HyperStore as a shared, fault-tolerant backup target, moving index data off the media servers and enabling erasure coding for high availability. The result was a simpler backup process, elimination of the single point of failure, and 50% less rack space needed for 2.5 PB of usable storage. The University of Leicester also expects Cloudian to help reduce overall storage costs by about 25% once the solution is fully deployed across all data centers.
