SWITCH, a Swiss education and research foundation, faced a growing multi‑petabyte archival challenge: long-term retention for research and administrative data with strict audit/regulatory needs, cost sensitivity, data‑sovereignty concerns and the need for native S3 features and ransomware protection. To address this, SWITCH partnered with Cloudian and selected Cloudian HyperStore object storage as the core of its modern storage infrastructure.

Cloudian deployed a 7 PB HyperStore solution (5 PB for long‑term archive and 2 PB for active object storage) with custom hardware and configurations, delivering native S3 compatibility, modular scalability, seamless Veeam integration and S3 Object Lock for ransomware protection. The result is a cost‑effective, on‑premises, cloud‑like platform that allows Swiss universities and research institutes to store and quickly retrieve diverse datasets, meet audit requirements, and recover rapidly from attacks while supporting future growth.
