Transforming pictures of cells into hard data through annotation

Sartorius, a biotechnology company that develops the Incucyte® Live-Cell Analysis System, engaged CloudFactory for help creating training data to power AI cell identification. Using CloudFactory’s Data Annotation Solution, Sartorius needed high-quality segmentation and labeling for vast, complex microscopy images that contained hundreds to millions of diverse cells—work their internal team could not scale or standardize alone.

CloudFactory delivered a managed annotation workforce paired with the Dataloop platform to perform precise cell segmentation, tracking, and labeling. In six months CloudFactory produced an open dataset of more than 5,000 images and 1.6 million annotated cells—the largest dataset in cell imaging and published in Nature Methods—accelerating projects that would have taken years in-house and enabling Sartorius to advance its machine-learning and image-analysis capabilities.
