Case Study: Bank of England achieves 40% faster report-pack analysis and a centralised 'One Bank' data platform with Cloudera

Using data analytics to build a stable future

The Bank of England, the UK’s central bank, needed to modernize how it gathers and analyses vast, diverse datasets to support monetary and financial stability. Years of locally funded BI projects had produced siloed datasets and slow workflows, and the immediate challenge was processing massive EMIR derivatives data—around 40 million rows a day and over 15 billion records—where producing report packs could take up to two days.

To solve this the Bank implemented a central “One Bank Data Architecture” using Hadoop-based platforms (Azure HDInsight and on‑prem Hortonworks Data Platform) and a Spark-tuned cluster for advanced analytics. The new platform broke down silos and let analysts run code directly on granular datasets, cutting report generation from days to under five minutes, supporting compliant, reliable data at scale, and enabling a planned, five‑times‑larger platform to meet future needs.
