A Cloudera Case Study
Navistar, a leading manufacturer of commercial trucks, buses, defense vehicles, and engines, faced a business-critical challenge: unplanned vehicle downtime drove large maintenance costs and lost revenue. Traditional time- or mileage-based service schedules missed early failure signals found in thousands of telematics and sensor data points, and Navistar’s legacy data warehouses couldn’t keep up with the growing volume and velocity of connected-vehicle data.
To fix this, Navistar built the OnCommand Connection remote-diagnostics platform on Cloudera Enterprise with SDX, ingesting 70+ telematics feeds from more than 375,000 vehicles (60+ TB) and correlating them with third-party data to run ML-driven predictive maintenance. The result: more than a 30% reduction in maintenance costs, customer maintenance cost-per-mile dropping from 12–15¢ to under 3¢, fewer tows and downtime, and the ability to analyze billions of rows in hours instead of weeks while scaling to add many more vehicles.
