National Children's Hospital Applies Enriched Data Analysis to Improve Pediatric Care & Outcomes

A national children's hospital needed to retain and analyze high-frequency bedside monitor data and correlate long-term environmental data with patient outcomes, but its enterprise data warehouse was at capacity. Critical projects—analyzing neonatal ICU alarms (ambient light/noise vs. infant vitals) and linking 20 years of EPA air-quality data to asthma admissions—required minute-by-minute records and far more storage and processing than the legacy systems could cost-effectively provide.

The hospital ran a quick proof-of-concept and deployed a Hadoop-based Cloudera Enterprise platform, ingesting ICU vitals, .wav files, and air-quality streams into Hive/Impala with Sqoop bridging to the EDW; data reached nearly 2 TB and grows ~50 GB/week. The result: continuous, full-fidelity analytics with fast interactive queries, richer correlations that inform care, lower total cost than expanding the EDW, and a roadmap for near-real-time alerts and deeper EMR and notes analysis.
