Komatsu Mining Corp (formerly Joy Global) offers JoySmart Solutions, an IIoT service that uses real-time telemetry from large mobile mining machines to improve safety, productivity and costs. As more equipment and customers were connected, their legacy data warehouse could not scale to handle hundreds to thousands of metrics per machine and an anticipated data growth of 30 TB per month, creating a need for a scalable analytics platform and faster machine-learning insights.

Komatsu partnered with Cloudera and Microsoft to deploy a cloud-based IIoT analytics platform on Azure, unifying time-series, alarm and third‑party PLC data for analytics and ML. The new platform reduced infrastructure complexity and cost, democratized access to machine data, and delivered measurable outcomes—most notably doubling daily utilization of a longwall system for one coal customer—while giving engineering teams better insight for product improvements.
