Case Study: GoPro achieves fast, governed cloud analytics with Cloudera Enterprise on AWS

A Cloudera Case Study

How GoPro uses Apache Hadoop in the Cloud

GoPro runs a global user-generated content network across desktops, mobile, TVs and gaming consoles to inspire purchases and drive product engagement. The Data Science & Engineering team needed to ingest and analyze vast cloud-generated logs — both streaming and batch — to understand feature usage, identify users likely to share videos, and deliver actionable insights to executives, all while enforcing strong governance and access control.

They built a Hadoop-based platform on Cloudera Enterprise in AWS EC2 using Kafka and Spark Streaming to ingest data into HDFS, with Impala for SQL, HBase for operational workloads, and Trifacta/Tableau for analytics and reporting. Role-based security via Apache Sentry, Kerberos and Active Directory plus the cloud deployment gave GoPro fast, flexible processing (sync/async reads and writes), enabling analysts to securely explore and share reports that inform R&D, marketing and revenue forecasting.
