PwC Central and Eastern Europe partnered with a global food retailer that lacked visibility into customer behavior and ad effectiveness, forcing department heads to plan promotions by instinct. The challenge was to analyze large volumes of electronic receipts and marketing data quickly and cost‑effectively so the retailer could optimize advertising, assortments, timing and budgets.
PwC built a Cloudera-based big data analytics platform (Hadoop with Impala, Spark, Flume, Hive and Sqoop) to ingest receipts and campaign data and deliver fast, mobile dashboards for daily decision‑making. Within six months the retailer saw key product purchasing volume rise up to 23%, warehousing costs fall 15%, marketing response rates jump as much as 150%, and roughly 20% increases in customer satisfaction and sales orders.
