Forecasting 30 years ahead with an open data architecture

Bank of Montreal (BMO), one of North America’s largest financial services providers, needed a faster, more flexible way to support long-term credit risk forecasting and regulatory reporting for IFRS9, CECL, and stress testing. Its existing analytics and data warehousing solution was slow, expensive, and limiting BMO’s ability to scale, so the bank turned to Cloudera and open-source technologies to move the platform in-house.

Cloudera helped BMO deploy its new Cheetah platform across environments and build an open data architecture using Apache Spark for batch processing and model execution. With Cloudera, BMO cut batch Credit Risk Applications runtime by 90%, more than covered the cost of the license, and can now analyze up to 18 million records monthly while forecasting as far as 30 years ahead with over a billion calculations per forecast.
