Barcelona-based Kernel Analytics, a boutique team combining mathematics, statistics, computer science and business expertise, was engaged by a major European airline that had amassed large volumes of online customer data but lacked the in-house big data skills and platform needed to deliver highly personalized marketing and communications to retain customers.
Kernel built a turnkey Big Data analytics platform using Cloudera Enterprise on Microsoft Azure, deploying a production Hadoop cluster (three master and three worker nodes), migrating existing data with a full ETL process, and adding an R/Python statistical modeling server. The solution enabled advanced customer segmentation and personalized recommendations, proved cost-effective and highly scalable, and has become the foundation for additional projects such as fraud detection and eventual real-time pricing.
