DocBox Using IoT to Improve Patient Care and Hospital Safety

DocBox provides an IoT-enabled, point-of-care platform designed to improve patient care and reduce medical errors, but faced a major challenge: health systems struggled to capture, store and analyze the massive, real-time streams of data from bedside medical devices. Traditional health IT approaches were prohibitively expensive and insufficient for the volume and velocity of data—an ICU bed can generate 300+ device parameters—leaving clinicians without the timely, contextual insights needed to reduce alert fatigue and guide treatment.

Partnering with Cloudera, DocBox built a real-time medical IoT platform that integrates device data and EMR information, supports real-time clinical decision support and stores granular historical data (about 1.5–2 GB per patient per day). By embracing standards like ICE and capturing device metadata, the solution powers third‑party clinical apps, frees nurses from manual data capture, reduces false alarms and medical errors, and delivers operational insights that lower costs and improve safety.
