Creating New Revenue Streams with an Advanced Anti-fraud Solution

MasterCard, which processes billions of credit-card transactions annually, needed to improve its MATCH anti-fraud service that helps acquirers vet merchants. Its legacy RDBMS and phonetic-matching approach couldn't keep up with growing volume and complexity, making fast, accurate merchant searches—and reliable fraud detection—increasingly difficult.

MasterCard migrated MATCH to a Cloudera enterprise data hub with Cloudera Search (Apache Solr), adding richer indexing, multiple matching algorithms and tunable scoring. The new platform increased capacity from about 10 million to nearly 50 million searches per year and from 1,000 to 25,000 searches per customer per day, improved accuracy and performance, and enabled new market opportunities and revenue streams (for example, offering MATCH to online marketplaces).
