Cloudera helps the Office for National Statistics (ONS) to produce clearer view of the UK economy

Cloudera worked with the UK’s Office for National Statistics (ONS) to help improve the detail and timeliness of GDP measurement. ONS had relied on monthly surveys of about 45,000 companies and needed to incorporate additional administrative data (notably VAT returns) to produce richer, more up-to-date estimates of economic activity.

Using Cloudera Enterprise and the Data Science Workbench, ONS ingested and analysed roughly 600,000 VAT returns—more than a tenfold expansion of the data available—while maintaining strong security controls. The platform let analysts, statisticians and data scientists run R, Python and Scala workflows to produce faster, more granular GDP estimates and more timely local and national statistics.
