City of Milan Transforms Its Services with Data-Driven Insights

The City of Milan, Italy’s second-largest municipality, needed a way to break down fragmented data silos across 23 directorates and 15,000 employees to improve public services and decision-making. Working with Cloudera, the city set out to build a data-driven culture using a cloud-based data lakehouse on Microsoft Azure, alongside stronger governance and analytics.

Cloudera implemented a secure, compliant platform that unified critical datasets, supported a real-time digital twin, and enabled data masking, anonymization, cataloging, and metadata management. The results included more targeted social services, better resource planning, and dashboards for school capacity and traffic fine management, including oversight of 1.6 million fines annually, all while improving GDPR compliance and data quality.
