A Cloudera Case Study
BT, a global telecommunications leader with about £18 billion in revenue serving 18 million consumers and nearly 3 million businesses, faced a critical data problem: business client records were spread across multiple databases and had to be reconciled daily with Dun & Bradstreet, requiring nearly one billion record comparisons. The legacy relational ETL platform could not keep up—processing took more than 24 hours and left business units working with day-old data.
BT deployed a Cloudera enterprise data hub (Hadoop) to replace the batch ETL with MapReduce, trained existing Linux admins to run the platform, and moved from pilot to production in nine months. The EDH delivered a 15x increase in data velocity—processing five times more data in one-third the time—yielding a 200–250% ROI in one year, lower incremental project costs, and new capabilities for broadband analytics and IoT use cases.
