Addressing controlled substance abuse and misuse with data analytics

Keck Medicine of USC, the University of Southern California’s medical enterprise, faced a major challenge in understanding and monitoring opioid-prescribing practices to help reduce controlled substance misuse. Before using Cloudera, the Controlled Substance Committee relied on manual, time-consuming pharmacy order reviews and had limited visibility into potential risks and outliers.

In 2020, Keck Medicine of USC used Cloudera to build the Controlled Substance Analytics Solution on a Cloudera-hosted Enterprise Data Lake, bringing together EMR data, orders, and patient health records into a secure, governed analytics platform. The solution eliminated manual data collection, reduced calculation errors, and clearly identified outlier prescriptions, enabling faster education and intervention while supporting clinical decision-making, surveillance, and real-time reporting.
