Cornell University Unites Cloud Systems for Better Visibility

Cornell University was struggling to manage and govern a growing set of cloud initiatives spread across 65 separate AWS accounts, which made cost allocation, invoicing and regulatory compliance (FERPA, HIPAA) difficult. After evaluating several options, Cornell selected CloudCheckr (CloudCheckr Cloud Management Platform, now part of Spot by NetApp) to centralize visibility and better manage its AWS usage.

CloudCheckr implemented a cross-account data collection and CMP dashboard that aggregates billing, resource inventory, configurations, logs and permissions, runs more than 450 automated compliance checks, and enables chargebacks to subaccounts. As a result, Cornell consolidated its accounts under a single governance model, gained tighter cost control and actionable recommendations for optimization, and used CloudCheckr to quickly identify vulnerable servers during a malware incident — improving security posture and simplifying invoicing.
