Case Study: GAIN Fitness achieves offline-first, globally scalable app performance with IBM Cloudant

A Cloudant Case Study

Preview of the GAIN Fitness Case Study

GAIN Fitness Mobile Personal Trainer App Powered by the Cloudant DBaaS

IBM Cloudant is IBM’s managed NoSQL JSON database service designed to keep application data flowing with low latency and no downtime — online or offline. Customers faced scaling limits, high admin overhead, and the need for offline-first mobile sync and global data availability (for example, Dimagi overloaded their CouchDB server), making it hard to deliver responsive, reliable apps worldwide.

Cloudant solved this with a horizontally scalable, RESTful JSON database (Cloudant DBaaS and Cloudant Local) that moves data closer to users, provides mobile sync libraries, geospatial and full‑text search, and frees teams from routine database administration. The result: faster app updates with no downtime, better offline-first user experiences, reduced latency at scale, and customers such as Dimagi, Hothead Games and Ovation reporting improved stability and more time to focus on product development.
