University of Toronto picks Nexenta ahead of storage stalwarts to save $9m

The University of Toronto needed a more cost-effective way to back up and support storage for more than 100,000 students and staff across three campuses, while also meeting needs for server virtualization and network storage. The university chose Cloud Pro’s NexentaStor software-defined storage solution after comparing it with larger storage vendors, mainly due to its lower cost and comparable functionality.

Cloud Pro implemented NexentaStor in the university’s datacenter and disaster recovery environment, running on commodity hardware. The deployment now supports more than 1,000 virtual machines and 3 petabytes of raw storage, and is expected to save the University of Toronto $9 million over five years.
