Zero Trust Networking with Cilium

Utmost, a provider of a worldwide SaaS extended workforce solution, faced the challenge of securing sensitive customer data on their cloud-native platform to achieve strict SOC 2 and ISO 27001 compliance. They needed to implement a robust zero trust networking model within their Kubernetes infrastructure, which demanded granular security controls, deep visibility for auditing, and automation to avoid impeding their development velocity.

To solve this, the Cloud Native Computing Foundation's Cilium was implemented as the default-deny Container Network Interface (CNI), establishing a zero trust foundation. They augmented this with Hubble for observability and created automated pipelines for developers to manage network policies, reducing operational overhead. The Cloud Native Computing Foundation's solution enabled Utmost to successfully manage over 4,000 network flows per second, achieve their compliance objectives, and maintain a secure, auditable infrastructure without sacrificing development speed.
