Throttling incoming traffic requests without changing the core banking system

HDFC Bank, a major Indian private sector bank, faced significant challenges due to the massive and fluctuating volume of transactions from India's Unified Payments Interface (UPI). Their legacy core banking system was difficult to scale, risking transaction timeouts and a poor customer experience. To throttle this traffic without altering the core system, they partnered with the Cloud Native Computing Foundation ecosystem, utilizing the Dapr (Distributed Application Runtime) framework to build a new solution.

The solution, an application named Governor, was built on Dapr and deployed on Kubernetes. Dapr provided the necessary abstractions for secure service communication, resiliency, and observability, which accelerated development. The Cloud Native Computing Foundation's technology enabled the system to autoscale seamlessly using Dapr metrics and KEDA, handling 750 million monthly transactions. This resulted in a significant decrease in transaction timeouts, providing a smoother user experience and deepening customer trust.
