Sling TV Marrying Kubernetes and AI to enable proper web scale

Sling TV, a streaming media service launched by DISH Network, experienced significant growing pains with its legacy systems as its customer base rapidly expanded. Their core challenge was building a reliable, web-scale architecture to distribute live TV over the internet to a multitude of uncontrolled user devices. To solve this, they partnered with the Cloud Native Computing Foundation ecosystem, specifically using Kubernetes, to create a more flexible and scalable platform.

With the help of the Cloud Native Computing Foundation technologies, Sling TV built a next-generation platform centered on Kubernetes, incorporating tools like Prometheus and Jaeger. The solution enabled a hybrid cloud strategy and drastically improved operational efficiency. The results were substantial, including a reduction in new application onboarding time from days to just one hour and achieving time and cost savings of two to three orders of magnitude, moving the company toward a one-click deployment model for an entire data center.
